A stereotype is defined by the Oxford Dictionary
A stereotype is defined by the Oxford Dictionary Every individual holds stereotypes. A stereotype is defined by the Oxford Dictionary of Psychology (pg. 730) as: ââ¬Ëa relatively fixed and oversimplified generalisation about a group or class of people, usually focusing on negative or unfavourable characteristicsââ¬â¢. When people put too much faith in stereotypical descriptions of people they can become prejudiced and can often discriminate against other groups. This can be very harmful and has led to countless atrocities, such as the racial purging of the Jews by the Nazis. Prejudices still are being fought through laws, such as Equal Opportunities legislation. However, the subject being discussed is not whether stereotypes are harmful or justifiable; it is whether they have a practical purpose, or are wasteful. It is generally the common consensus that stereotyping and prejudice should not continue. However without stereotypes we may find the social world a lot harder to perceive and understand. We rely on stereotypes to h elp us function in society. With such a diverse population, the environment we live in could be very confusing. Unfortunately stereotypes may block out a lot of what makes our society so diverse and just group people into simple categories. They may also affect peoplesââ¬â¢ choices in life. Career paths people may want to take could seem inappropriate for someone in their group and so are avoided. From an evolutionary standpoint, stereotypes must have a use because they exist. People start creating stereotypes from a very young age and they are hard to break. However, having a purpose doesnââ¬â¢t exclude the fact that stereotypes are wasteful. The main beneficial use of stereotypes is that they greatly speed up cognitive processing. The world is full of people, they all look unique and the all behave differently. If each person chose to actively perceive and evaluate every individual they encountered, there wouldnââ¬â¢t be much time for anything else. This is why stereotype s exist. People can glance around a room, see a spectrum of faces and not have to stop to think about each person. This frees up the brain for more important tasks. Macrae, Milne, & Bodenhausen (1994) as cited by Taylor, Peplau, & Sears (pg. 184). conducted an experiment to see if the priming of stereotypes can leave the brain freer to process other information. Students were presented with a list of trait words for an individual and, at the same time, information about Indonesia. Half of these students were first given a group label for the individual, e.g. Black or Italian. Those given the group label remembered more traits that were label consistent and more information about Indonesia. This demonstrates that stereotypes make the social world a lot easier to process and are definitely very useful. However, this oversimplification of the world we see can lead us to prejudice against other groups, and can lead to discrimination. People often look only at the negative characteristic s of a group. In doing this we may waste the important contributions that these different groupsââ¬â¢ perspectives can offer. Taylor, Fiske, Eticoff, & Ruderman (1978) as cited by Taylor et al. (pg. 185) asked participants to observe a conversation between people of a mix of races. When asked to remember which individual made certain contributions the participants would often only be able to remember the race of the individual. This shows that people often place far too much emphasis on group membership and can ignore the attributes of the individual. This can lead people to ignore information that comes from a source that they may deem inferior.

Libertarianism Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Libertarianism - Essay Example If the state interferes the people would have to face problems at the hands of the state. Injustice and inequality would prevail in the society if the state intervenes. Individualism and self owner ship are some other concepts of libertarianism. Both these concepts relate to the ownership of private resources and independence of the people. They put forward that the state should not intervene in the matters of private ownership as it would disrupt the peace and integrity of the society. Minarchism is another form which puts forward that the states should only come into play when there are protection issues. Equality is also one form which is promoted by this concept so that the people do not share natural resources unequally. This equality can only be promoted if a stateless society exists where the state does not intervene much into the matters of public. There can be many advantages for libertarianism if seen from a rational perspective. As the state will not intervene in the matters of the private properties people can live easily and without problems. Cooperation is at the core of the philosophy and it can help people in all ways to get over the problems that they may face. As individual liberty is promoted in this political philosophy it is possible that the people would live in peace and harmony without any interference from the state. Injustice would not be done at the hands of the state this philosophy prevails. Moreover equality can also be promoted through this political philosophy. On the other hands the political philosophy has other problems which many people cite when referring to it. Individual liberty can be beneficial to the state till one point but after that it can harm the integrity and peace of the whole society. Individual ownership and less interference from the states can create a gap between different groups. The states necessarily have to show

LeGAL ASPECTS of contract administration Assignment
LeGAL ASPECTS of contract administration - Assignment Example Regardless, exclusion clauses are not always enforceable because they do not meet the three-rule test. Exclusion terms are part of virtually every contractual agreement (Culp, 2010). The clauses and related implied terms function by excluding or restricting the entitlements of a party to the contract in the event of a breach (Frey, & Frey, 2000). For instance, if a party to a contract intends to restrict his or her liability, the party is expected to incorporate an exemption clause restricting the amount of reparations that they will be willing to part with in relation to a clearly defined total amount of damages (Round & Shanahan, 2012). In a number of cases, a party may incorporate a written term seeking to exonerate them from any kind of liability for a particular issue that could affect the contract, for example, brittle goods being broken whilst in shipment (Latimer, 2012). This way, exclusion terms function to the advantage of one party to a contract. Generally, an exemption clause in contract law can only be effective if the party relying on it has been reasonable enough in his or her notification of the other party regarding the same (Culp, 2010). The party consenting to the exemption clause must also be cognizant of its inclusion into the contract. Latimer (2012) notes that to secure its enforceability, the following conditions should be met: firstly, the proposing party can serve notice of the exclusion clause on the other party via actual or constructive means. Actual notice takes place when the offerer actually notifies the other party or when it is apparent in the contract and can be seen by a reasonable person (Scott, 2013). Secondly, constructive notice takes place when the offerer had acted reasonably to notify the other party of the existence of such clauses. Lastly, courts may be persuaded to resolve any disputes

Willy Loman Is The Cause Of Hi :: essays research papers
Willy Loman is the cause of his own misfortune à à à à à Many characters in literature are the cause of their own misfortune. In the play Death of a Salesman by author Miller, Willy Loman is responsible for his misfortune as well as the misfortune of his two sons Happy and Biff. Willy creates his own small world in which he is the boss, everything goes around him, nothing will change and nothing will go wrong. But by thinking this way Willy causes his own misfortune. à à à à à Willy brags to his boys that he is well liked, that he is a 'big man';, but in reality he is not. He says that he went to Providence, met the Mayor, had coffee with him. Willy says: 'And they know me, boys, they know me up and down New England'; (Death of a Salesman 30). This comment illustrates how Willy shows off in front of his sons. He says he can park his car in any street in New England, and the cops will protect it like their own. Willy believes that he is a 'number one'; man but at the same time he knows and says that he is not what he dreams about, but he just does not want to admit it. 'You know, the trouble is, Linda, people don't seem to take me… They seem to laugh at me… they just pass me by. I'm not noticed'; (36) says Willy. He knows the fact that he is a total failure and he never admits it. Then Willy mentions that he cannot sell anything and when Linda says that he is the handsomest, he disagrees with her, says he is fat, foolish to l ook at. Willy tells everyone and believes in the dream that he is well liked, that he is a 'number-one'; man. Thinking that way Willy creates his own little world where he is the boss and he does the things which he should not do causing his own misfortune. à à à à à Willy believes in and follows his wrong ideas. And the worst part is that he teaches them his sons Biff and Happy. He thinks that appearance is everything. Willy says: 'Because the man who makes an appearance in the business world, the man who creates personal interest, is the man who gets ahead. Be liked and you will never want'; (33). This comment illustrates Willy's belief in the wrong idea that appearance is everything.

JROTC Leadership and Characterization Essay
Leadership is defined as the process in which an individual influences the group of individuals to attain a common goal. The goal is attained by mutual cooperation and behavior. A leader has a sense of positivity and directs others to reach the specified goal. In The Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps, (JROTC) the leaders teach us how to become better leaders. They also teach us to build character and leadership by providing guidance and putting us cadets in a position that we are not accustomed to. This helps us adapt to new types of things. We also have to set the example for the school, especially when we wear our uniforms. When we put on that uniform it means we are to be a leader. People watch us because we have the uniform on and they know we are a part of JROTC therefore they expect more out of us. A leader is someone who stands not only for their cause but takes responsibility and motivates other individuals also. There is a difference between being a boss and a leader. A leader is a motivation for others and inspires individuals to aim higher and attain that aim. However, a boss only supervises over his inferiors. Power naturally comes to a leader but power has to be earned by a boss. The best leaders are those who can lead and direct without misuse of their power. They must be able to inspire others in a direction or greater good. They must be strong enough to stand firm in decision making and leading others without a selfish attitude. In order to be a successful leader it is essential to have good character. You must have honesty, confidence, communication, and commitment. You have to have honesty because if someone is doing something wrong you need to be able to have honest feedback. You need communication because you need to be able to command your platoon. You need to have commitment because you need to stick with it and create a relationship with your platoon so you, and they, will feel more comfortable. You need to have confidence because you need to be sure of what you are doing at all times. No one wants or needs a weak leader. I think have confidence is one of the most important traits to be a good leader. One person that I think has all of these characteristics and is a great is leader is President Barack Obama. He sets a great example for the country. He is honest, he has not quit and always looks focused on his work. I think I am a good leader because I have all of those character traits. I also have respect, passion, and am very supportive. JROTC has helps me a lot with my character and my personality. I do not have to be a follower anymore. I am now a leader because of JROTC.

Who Appoints and Approves Supreme Court Justices
The power to appoint Supreme Court justices belongs exclusively to the President of the United States, according to U.S. Constitution. Supreme Court nominees, after being selected by the president must be approved by a simple majority vote (51 votes) of the Senate. Under Article II of the Constitution, the President of the United States alone is empowered to nominate Supreme Court Justices and the U.S. Senate is required to confirm those nominations. As the Constitution states, ââ¬Å"he [the president] shall nominate, and by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, shall appoint ... Judges of the supreme Court...â⬠The requirement for the Senate to confirm the presidentââ¬â¢s nominees for Supreme Court Justices and other high-level positions enforces the concept of checks and balances of powers between the three branches of government envisioned by the Founding Fathers. Several steps are involved in the appointment and confirmation process for Supreme Court justices. Presidential Appointment Working with his or her staff, new presidents prepare lists of possible Supreme Court nominees. Since the Constitution does not set any qualifications for service as a Justice, the President may nominate any individual to serve on the Court. After being nominated by the president, candidates are subjected to a series of often politically partisan hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee composed of lawmakers from both parties. The committee may also call other witnesses to testify regarding the suitability and qualifications of the candidate to serve on the Supreme Court. Committee Hearing As soon as the presidents nomination is received by the Senate, it is referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee. The Judiciary Committee sends the nominee a questionnaire. The questionnaire requests the nominees biographical, financial and employment information, and copies of the nominees legal writings, opinions issued, testimony and speeches. The Judiciary Committee holds a hearing on the nomination. The nominee makes an opening statement and then answers questions from the Committee members. The hearing can take several days and the questioning can become politically partisan and intense. After the hearing is completed, Committee members are given one week to submit written follow-up questions. The nominee submits written responses. Finally, the Committee votes on the nomination. The Committee can vote to send the nomination to the full Senate with a recommendation of either approval or rejection. The Committee can also vote to send the nomination to the full Senate without a recomm endation. The Judiciary Committeeââ¬â¢s practice of conducting personal interviews of Supreme Court nominees did not beinà until 1925 when some senators were concerned about a nomineeââ¬â¢s ties to Wall Street. In response, the nominee himself took the unprecedented action of asking to appear before the Committee to answerââ¬âwhile under oathââ¬âthe senatorsââ¬â¢ questions. Once largely unnoticed by the general public, the Senateââ¬â¢s Supreme Court nominee confirmation process now attracts considerable attention from the public, as well as influential special-interest groups, which often lobby senators to confirm or to reject a nominee Consideration by the Full Senate After receiving the recommendation of the Judiciary Committee, the full Senate holds its own hearing and debates the nomination. The Chairman of the Judiciary Committee leads the Senate hearing. The senior Democratic and Republican members of the Judiciary Committee lead their partys questioning. The Senate hearing and debate typically take less than a week. Finally, the full Senate will vote on the nomination. A simple majority vote of the Senators present is required for the nomination to be confirmed. If the Senate confirms the nomination, the nominee usually goes directly to the White House to be sworn in. The swearing in is typically conducted by the Chief Justice. If the Chief Justice is not available, any Supreme Court Justice can administer the oath of office. How Long Does All of This Usually Take? According to records compiled by the Senate Judiciary Committee, it takes an average of 2-1/2 months for a nominee to reach a full vote in the Senate. Before 1981, the Senate typically acted swiftly. From the administrations of Presidents Harry Truman through Richard Nixon, justices were typically approved within one month. However, from the Ronald Reagan administration to the present, the process has grown far longer. Since 1975, the average number of days from nomination to final Senate vote has been 2.2 months, according to the independent Congressional Research Service. Many legal experts attribute this to what Congress perceives to be the increasingly political role of the Supreme Court. This ââ¬Å"politicizationâ⬠of the court and the Senate confirmation process has drawn criticism. For example, columnist George F. Will called the Senateââ¬â¢s 1987 rejection of Robert Borkââ¬â¢s nomination ââ¬Å"unjustâ⬠and argued that the nomination process does not delve deeply into the nominees jurisprudential thinking. Today, Supreme Court nominations spur media speculation about the conservative or liberal leanings of potential justices. One indication of the politicization of the confirmation process is how much time each nominee spends being questioned. Before 1925, nominees were rarely if ever questioned. Since 1955, however, every nominee has been required to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee. In addition, the number hours nominees spend being questioned has increased from single digits before 1980 to double digits today. In 2018, for example, the Judiciary Committee spent 32 grueling hours questioning Brett Kavanaugh before confirming him, voting along political and ideological lines. How Many Nominations are Confirmed? Since the Supreme Court was established in 1789, presidents have submitted 161 nominations for the Court, including those for chief justice. Of this total, 124 were confirmed, including 7 nominees who decline to serve. About Recess Appointments Presidents may and have also placed justices on the Supreme Court using the often-controversial recess appointment process. Whenever the Senate is in a recess, the president is allowed to make temporary appointments to any office requiring Senate approval, including vacancies on the Supreme Court, without the Senates approval. Persons appointed to the Supreme Court be a recess appointment are allowed to hold their positions only until the end of the next session of Congress ââ¬â or for a maximum of two years. In order to continue to serve afterward, the nominee must be formally nominated by the president and confirmed by the Senate.
